A Celebration of Ancient Greek Music in Athens

Learning about ancient Greek music at at the Athens Hostel

An event celebrating ancient Greek music, which was organized by the Australian Archaeological Institute, took place recently in Athens, at the Athens Hostel.

The Australian Archeological institute, founded in 1980 in Athens, seeks to promote the participation of Australians in the field of Greek archaeology.

The performance was a unique opportunity to learn about and experience ancient sounds through authentically-recreated musical instruments. The painstakingly-handcrafted instruments were made by Antonios Ktenas and Konstantinos Fragkis, who are experts in the field of ancient Greek music.

The performers took listeners on a musical trip back to the Archaic period through the Hellenistic period of Greek history. Accompanied by singers, they performed music set to the works of Homer, Hesiod, Euripides, and various other lyric poets.

This was an interactive experience, with the audience participating in song as instructed by the presenters. The creators even allowed everyone in the audience to handle and play the instruments a bit.
