Anarchist Rampage Hits Athens’ Main Shopping Street

A group of suspected anarchists smashed the windows of at least 11 shops on Ermou Street, the main shopping district of Athens, late on Tuesday.

There were no arrests and claim of responsibility for the act of mass vandalism has been forthcoming.

In a similar incident last July, riot police made extensive use of tear gas to disperse a march by anarchists that proceeded to ransack dozens of Ermou Street stores.

In recent weeks anarchist groups have launched a violent campaign in support of Constantinos Giagtzoglou, a 29-year-old terrorist suspect who was recently transferred from Korydallos maximum security prison to a Larissa penitentiary.

Police suspect that Tuesday’s rampage may be in solidarity with the anarchists’ jailed comrade.
