Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has sent letters to top European Union officials in protest over Turkey’s most recent activities in the Eastern Mediterranean on Wednesday.

The move follows the publication in the Turkish government’s gazette of a map outlining areas of the Greek continental shelf where the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) has applied for exploration permits.

The letters were sent to European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said in a press briefing on Thursday.

During a meeting with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Prime Minister Mitsotakis expressed confidence that Greece has the support of her European partners.

“I am absolutely certain we will have the absolute support of the European Union so that we may, I hope, overcome this period in time,” he stated.

The Prime Minister added that “Greece will face all challenges with firmness, self-confidence and always in line with international law, as it has always done and as it will continue to do.”

The controversial Turkish map shows the 24 blocks that Ankara has demarcated from its shores to the point where its sea borders ostensibly meet Libya, based on the maritime border agreement it signed with the North African country’s internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) last December.
