Greek-Cypriots Meet with Israel, Greece to Enhance Security in Region

On Friday Greek Cypriots deepened their military ties with Greece and Israel during a Trilateral Defence Summit.

Following the meeting, the ministers issued a joint statement saying that they look forward to enhancing “trilateral defence collaboration for the mutual benefit of our countries in spheres of military cooperation, maritime counter-terrorism collaboration, defence-industrial cooperation and strategic consultations.”

Greek Cypriot Defence Minister Savvas Angelides and his Israeli and Greek counterparts Avigdor Lieberman and Panos Kammenos said that they plan to “bolster security and more effectively counter common threats in a turbulent region.”

The ministers also said that they plan to enhance joint efforts in upgrading cyber security, joint military drills as well as search and rescue operations in the eastern Mediterranean.

A main source of concern in the region revolves around the surge of illegal and undocumented migrants entering the region, which Lieberman said presents threats of terror. He referred to the challenges the migrant crisis presents as creating “an ocean of violence” where “rogue states” will be able to operate if not met by collective efforts of the three countries.
