Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Strikes West of Zakynthos

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck in the Ionian Sea about 34 kms (21 miles) west of the Greek island of Zakynthos early on Thursday.

The jolt was felt in Zakynthos and Kefalonia but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

According to the US Geological Survey the quake struck at a depth of 16.7 km (10 miles).

Greek scientists say that there is no reason for concern.

“The earthquake relieved much of the energy accumulated under the seabed, and thus the probability of a larger earthquake is reduced,” said seismologist Eythimios Lekkas.
