In an unprecedented incident, the Russian Embassy to Athens blasted the US Senator Bob Menendez, Washington and the American strategy in the eastern Mediterranean in a series of tweets on Holy Thursday.
The embassy published four different tweets in the Greek language, accusing Washington of interfering in Greece’s domestic affairs and declaring that all the US cares about is selling weapons to Turkey, instead of Russia being able to do so.
The first tweet said that ”American Senators give morality lessons once again, this time under the title ”With which countries to be friends and with which not to.”
”Isn’t this an intervention to Greece’s domestic politics?”, the tweet concludes.

The second tweet says that America’s aim is not to prevent Turkey from buying modern air-defense weapons, but to force Ankara buy them from the US.
The third tweet notes that Moscow’s decision to sell its S-400 missiles to Ankara is not an action against third countries, saying that despite the American and European sanctions against Russia, Moscow is open to cooperate with Greece militarily.

The fourth tweet notes that Russia’s stance in the Mediterranean remains unchanged; it is in favor of international law and against actions which provoke tensions.
It concludes by noting that Russia considers the United Nations’ Convention on the Law of the Sea of fundamental importance to resolving any dispute, ”unlike some other countries.”

Senator Menendez has been in Athens for several days, meeting with many members within the political and defense leadership of Greece.
On Holy Wednesday, Greek PM Alexis Tsipras expressed his gratitude to Menendez for his crucial involvement in promoting Greek-American relations. He also thanked the senator for the many legislative initiatives he has undertaken in favor of Greece and Cyprus in recent years, as a member of the US Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee.
