Schoolkids March in Remote Greek Island of the Dodecanese (video)

Children on the remote island of Agathonisi in the Dodecanese marched during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the island chain joining Greece in 1947.

The march and the following ceremony were attended by most of the island’s 150 inhabitants, including the mayor and representatives of the small army garrison stationed on the island.

In Rhodes, the largest of the 15 main islands and 93 islets that form the Dodecanese, a school parade also took place to mark the occasion.

It was only in 1947, after having endured centuries of occupation by different powers and a campaign to strip them of their Greek identity, that the islanders joined their fellow Greeks.
