The village of Benitses is located near the center of the island, just twelve km. South of Corfu Town .Here, the sea and the mountains co-exist in harmony like many other things, including traditional singing and modern music, the white-washed patios full of flowers, the graphic chapels alongside the luxurious hotel reception areas and lastly the traditional and international cuisine and the busy restaurants and bars.
In the last few years, Benitses has been part of the municipality of Achillion with a special place among other villages.Just 3 km away from Benitses there is the famous Achillion Museum (Sisi’s Palace) and the well-known “Mouse Island of Corfou”. Through the festive functions of the municipality, the local choir, the community center and the governing authority have organised festivals worthy of great admiration. Distinguished among these are the Resurrection Night, Saint-Marina celebration ( 16-17/07), The Baptism(06/01), and the Sardine festival(August).
Beside the crystal clear waters of the beaches, awarded with the EU Blue Flag, the new harbor is built with modern facilities, enhancing the village, the municipality and also the whole island.
God possibly created this place for the fairies to live among the olive trees and the natural springs of the beautiful green mountains. Among the blue of the sky and the azure of the Ionian Sea. He probably wanted to give us a small taste of heaven on earth.
The legend claims that Benitses was named after a pirate’s boat ,or even the pirate himself, who was enraptured by the beauty of this place. The ruins of the 3rd.Century courtyards and the Roman baths, clearly depict that Benitses has been a place of retreat for centuries. In the 1970’s, Benitses was transformed from famous fishing village to tourist resort, pionering tourist development for the island and for the whole of Greece. Of course you can not miss the famous Shell Museum which is here since 1989. The lively spirit of about one thousand residents is constantly in search for new ways of blooming.
With it’s graphic streets and alleys, it’s crystal clear sea and the warm environment created by it’s residents to visitors, local and foreign, Benitses will become a part of themselves, forever.
