The Little Drummer Girl, a television series based on John le Carre’s acclaimed novel, has completed filming after 24 days of shooting in some of Greece’s historical landmarks.

The project had been dogged by controversy, with Greece’s Central Archaeological Council initially rejected a BBC application to film scenes at the archaeological site in Sounion.

This decision immediately followed a Greek government initiative to attract more foreign filmmakers to Greece’s shores. The decision was eventually reversed and filming permitted to go ahead under certain restrictions.

The Greek Film Centre describes the BBC-co-produced series as a complex tale that combines an espionage thriller and a love story. Based on the book by legendary author John le Carre, it is directed by highly acclaimed Korean director Park Chan-wook (The Hand-maiden, Old Boy).

It stars Michael Moshonov (Mary Magdalene, The City & The City), Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth, The Falling), Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies, True Blood, Tarzan) and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals, Revolutionary Road, The Shape of Water).

The Little Drummer Girl was filmed in several locations in Attica. Specifically, it was shot in Athens, Elefsina, Kinetta, the Acropolis and the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion. All Greek locations were used to showcase Greece and Athens, whereas Elefsina was used to represent Lebanon and the Nikaia neighborhood in Athens was used as Palestine.
