An earthquake meassuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit south-western Peloponnese at 08:15 local time.

According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, it had a focal depth of 10 kilometers and the epicenter is located in the Ionian Sea, 28 kilometers southwest of Methoni.

“The earthquake had a long duration and initially we were worried,” said Dimitris Kafantaris, mayor of the town of Pylos located north of the epicenter.

Speaking to the Greek media he noted that the region is earthquake prone.

So far no injuries or damage has been reported, he added.

The head of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, Efthymios Lekkas, said that it was likely this was the main quake with aftershocks not expected to be stronger.
