ND Criticises Government’s ‘Unclear Position’ on Name Dispute with FYROM

Main opposition party New Democracy’s spokeswoman Maria Spyraki on Wednesday, criticised the government for what she said was a dangerous lack of clarity regarding the name dispute with Greece’s northern neighbour, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

“In the new negotiation on [FYROM’s] name, the government does not have a clear position. Different things are supported by Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, others by the Defence Minister and ruling coalition partner Panos Kammenos, and completely different things again by SYRIZA ministers,” Spyraki said.

“This bizarre situation is dangerous for the country’s interests. We call on the governing partners to reach an understanding, and agree on a position that they have an obligation to present.

New Democracy repeats that the position it imposed at the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008, was for a composite name for all uses,” she added.
