Teachers Clash With Police in Central Athens

Dozens of teachers clashed with the police outside the Greek parliament in Syntagma Square on Friday over the government’s proposed reforms to the educational system.

Riot police used tear gas to push the demonstrators away in clashes which happened to coincide with a visit to Greece by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The teachers are demanding the withdrawal of legislation making changes to the way educators are appointed within the public school system.

Later, a group of demonstrators attempted to rally outside the prime ministerial office but they were also thwarted and turned away by riot police.

At the time of writing no injuries had been reported.
