Ukrainians Claim Unfair Sentencing by Greek Courts

Ukrainian media are reporting claims that Ukrainian nationals convicted and jailed in Greece for people smuggling are receiving longer sentences than other nationalities imprisoned for the same offence.

The claims follow Monday’s sentencing of a 40-year-old Ukrainian sailor identified as Denys Brovchenko for smuggling refugees from Syria into Greece. He reportedly received 180 years in prison.

Unian news agency reported the case, saying relatives of other Ukrainians jailed in Greece have appealed to their government to intervene.

They claim their diplomats in Athens have failed to help those convicted and say Turkish and EU nationals found guilty of people smuggling get lighter sentences after interventions from their consuls.
