A pair of Turkish F-16 jets entered Greek airspace on Thursday, before being engaged in a “mock dogfight” by the Greek air force, local media report.

The Turkish jets infringed on Greek airspace between the islands of Limnos and Lesvos, according to newspaper Kathimerini.

Turkish-Greek tension over the Aegean has been simmering since last December, when Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the head of the Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party, vowed to “take back” 18 Greek islands in the sea.

In recent comments, Kilicdaroglu raised the issue of the small Greek island of Pserimos, close to the Turkish coast and home to around 80 people, by asking “to whom does it belong? Is it ours or Greece’s?”

On Wednesday a Turkish coastguard vessel clipped a Hellenic Navy gunboat near the islet of Imia.
