Skopje Toughens Position on ‘Macedonia’ Issue, Protesters Burn Greek Flag

Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Prime Minister Zoran Zaev on Tuesday denied that he told Reuters his country is willing to change its constitution over the name dispute with Greece.

According to the Athens Macedonian News Agency, an official Skopje statement claims that the prime minister spoke to Reuters about the name change but not of a constitutional change.

The FYROM government also denies that Zaev said in his interview that his country has proposed four options for settling the name dispute with Greece. The proposals, Skopje says, were made by UN mediator Matthew Nimetz.

Protesters in Skopje burn Greek flag

About 5,000 people held a protest rally in Skopje on Tuesday. The protesters demanded that the country’s name remains the same and no amendments to be made to the constitution.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the EU offices and then moved towards the FYROM parliament. A group of protesters burned a Greek flag in front of the parliament.

The crowd were demanding that negotiations over the name issue under the UN should stop immediately.
