The Archaeological Museum of Aegina is located in the archaeological site of Kolona. It is built next to the ruins of successive prehistoric settlements and the acropolis of historical times. The exhibits come mainly from the Colonial archaeological site.

The building where the museum is housed is ground floor, equilateral, stone-built and tiled with a patio in the center. A wooden gallery surrounds the atrium and the outside of the building.

Today’s exhibition takes over the entrance of the museum wing, consisting of three halls. The collection covers the period from prehistoric to Roman times. In the left corner room there are two pre-historic ceramic displays (Neolithic-Mycenaean era).Large pithoi of the Early Helladic and Middle Helladic period surround the showcases. In the two showrooms of the central hall are exhibited pottery of the geometric and archaic period. The variety of pottery imports (Argos, Rhodes, Corinth, Attica) proves the intense commercial activity of Aeginetes in historical times, which is also testified in the ancient texts. In the same room is represented the Aeginian plastic (7th-5th century BC) with a series of sculptures.

Aegina was the seat of one of the most famous plastic schools in Archaic times. Its development illustrates the sculptures of the pediments of the two archaic temples of Apollo, the two sphinxes of the sanctuary and some reliefs (early votive column-late archaic reliefs). Most important is the inscription referring to the ancient temple of Aphaia. The showcases are framed by reliefs, sanctuaries and a few Hellenistic and Roman works. A part of the Capodistrian collection of reliefs (mainly from Rhenia), which was the content of the first “National Museum” of Greece, is exhibited in the atrium gallery.
