In the beginning, as a Museum of Thassos, the ground floor of the Limenas Primary School was used, most probably as early as 1911, with the opening of the excavations of the French School. In this first building the pieces of the famous archaic kouros were transferred and it became its first restoration. The location of the new building, which was originally intended for a museum, was dictated by the historical course of the excavations. .These had originally revealed the great monumental architectural ensemble of the ancient market, the heart of the ancient city. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the place of the ancient city, there was no settlement but the “ladder”, the port of the traditional settlement of Panagia. After the development of the modern settlement over the years, both the market and the Museum were at the heart of the modern city of Thassos.

The first building of the Archaeological Museum of Thassos, what we now refer to as an old wing, began to be built in 1931 and was completed in 1935 with a state subsidy. It is the oldest museum building in northern Greece. Since then, ongoing research and the accumulation of archaeological material has created the need to expand the Museum. For this reason, in the years 1989-1999, a new wing was built on the neighboring plot. The work of the “New Permanent Exhibition and its supporting infrastructures” was carried out under the authority of the 1st Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Kavala in the years 2003-2009.

The Museum currently has a total area of 2,376 sq. Meters. The new permanent exhibition covers 1,400 sq.m. And contains around 1,700 finds. Other study and storage rooms, maintenance workshops and offices have been set up. The extent of the exhibition grounds makes the Thassos Museum the largest in East Macedonia and Thrace and one of the largest in the north-Helladic area. The vertebrate exhibition areas, with natural lighting guaranteed in a balanced combination with the artificial one, highlight the unique findings of ancient Thassos and show the Museum in one of the most important areas of Greece
