The National Gallery – Alexandros Soutzos Museum gives priority to the emergence of modern Greek art. The original core of tables, established since the early years of the new state, over Capodistrias, was enriched by donations, particularly Western European paintings, of rich diaspora Greeks. In 117 works counted in 1878, a large donation of Alexander Soutzos paintings was added, among which are works by Karavagius, Andreas Pavia, Stefanos Tzagarolos, Gyzis, Lytras, Volanakis and others. Today, the total number of paintings, sculptures, engravings, miniatures and furniture of the National Gallery is 9,500.

Today, the National Art Gallery has a special art history library, a full photo lab, a modern maintenance workshop, a wood restoration workshop and carpentry, and paper preservation.

Finally, on the ground floor of the main building, a sculpture was made to expose the sculptures of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Besides the presentation of its permanent exhibits, the Gallery organizes periodical exhibitions and other events of visual arts and related artistic content
