The creation of the Spetses Museum is mainly due to the academic and professor of the University of Athens, G. Sotiriou. At his instigation Hatzigiannis Mexis, one of the first rulers of the island in the years of the Struggle, was donated to the State in 1938 by his last heirs, Kalomira Méxi and Niketa Thermisioti-Katsina, to house the archaeological, Folklore collection of the island.

The Hellenic Ministry of Culture is constantly making efforts to maintain the building as well as to acquire as many exhibits as possible. Recently, new excavations have begun, the results of which will contribute to the knowledge of the history of the island.
